Emerging Trends in Volunteer Engagement
Speaker: Lowell Aplebaum

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any association – the strategic visionaries with industry insight, the subject matter experts training the future, the unpaid work force giving back. Traditional models are no longer keeping pace with the evolving needs of our volunteers – associations need to consider new approaches to targeted volunteer segments, and the types of commitments they seek.
In this session we will explore how our volunteer management programs need to adapt to fit the needs of today’s volunteers. We will examine research and approaches to address such factors as:
- Engaging the next generation earlier
- Retaining the time, treasure, and talent of retiring leaders
- Redefining ‘volunteer’ in a world with social media
- Volunteer recognition – recognizing superstars early and often
- Sustainable volunteer incubators

Most communicators greatly underestimate the degree to which communications clutter and overload prevent them from reaching their target audience. Instead of “more e-mails is better” approach, learn how to use your communications as a real business asset that compels your audience to pay attention and then take action. If you don’t have access to a dedicated, specialized, experiences communications department, you need a roadmap that you can plot out once, and then use as a compass to be efficient and proactive about your communications! Set new rules. Use key messages to your advantage. Unify your staff with a plan. Then organize and deploy communications that are meaningful to your customers.
